Taylor Hicks back in Birmingham, helping Habitat for Humanity
By Mary Colurso -- The Birmingham News
March 15, 2010, 2:01PM
Birmingham's Taylor Hicks is entirely comfortable with a microphone or harmonica in his hands. But what about a tool belt?

Taylor Hicks (Special / Taylor Hicks Web site)We'll find out on Thursday, March 18, when the singer and former "American Idol" winner returns to his hometown to help Habitat for Humanity.

Hicks will participate in a build at 4817 Michigan Ave., in the Wylam Oaks subdivision. He'll be painting and putting siding on a house for the Thompson family, according to a Habitat spokesman.

Volunteers from Independent Presbyterian Church and Habitat's Collegiate Challenge program will be working that day, as well.

Hicks, 33, continues to perform in the national tour of "Grease," in the role of Teen Angel. The Hoover native has been involved with charity events here before, including benefits for Kid One Transport.

We need to monitor the MyFoxAl site for a video-apparently based on these pics he was interviewed on Good Day Alabama-I didn't catch it this AM-but I just checked there and no video up-yet--

I'm so amazed at all the love he shares with others. How many celebs would take time to help those in need, as Taylor does; especially when their time is so limited. Not only does he share his music, but he also shares himself in so many ways. I am grateful! :ld

Thanx for the wonderful pictures. :gh

Taylor shows his caring in so many ways. This is a wonderful day to set an example for others to join efforts like this. I am always impressed when I see celebs use their time and name to help others. Taylor has always done this.

Taylor inspires us all to do whatever we can in our own communities. We don't have to be a celebrity.

Yep, he actually is swinging a hammer! hehe!

Last year on March 18, he was swinging a mic at Roxy's on the Sunset Strip. This year, he was swinging a hammer in Birmingham.

Life is grand!!!

He never forgets where he is from. He and Brian are really getting into the construction.

I liked his alluding to not only building homes, but building a community. I don't think I ever thought that building community is as important as building homes.
