It sounded great, you guys! I was not able to be at this one . . . . but I tried, LOL! Hope to read more about it here later, as folks wake up! If this cellcert was anything like the last one it was probably fabulous - as only Taylor can do! Looking forward to the details!

While THE HIGH NOON SALOON holds a bit more than 400 people, the attendance last evening numbers a bit more than 100.
Considering the weather, this is really not bad at all............. I think the intimacy was enhanced and Taylor was very vocal and seemed comfortable with the people there.

I have heard other estimates that say the attendance was between 200 and 300.............. That is quite a discrepancy
........ wonder what the exact gate was .

A WONDERFUL RECAP FROM GYPSEE: MEDIA TO FOLLOW

Madison was cold...coldest weather I've experienced in a long time. I got to my hotel quite late because of the roads, so after dinner, got to the venue about 8, just in time for the opening performer. He was very good, but of course, we all wanted TAYLOR TAYLOR! This was an acoustic concert...it was Sam, Brian, and Jason with him...a night of good fun with some incredible Bama Boys.

The band came in, everyone had to enter through the front door. A few mins later, Brian and Taylor walked very quickly through the crowd. When the band took the stage and Sam walked out, we all went crazy. Man, Sam rawked the house and it was so very good to see him up there again.
Taylor came on and we were at a table directly in front of him, just behind the front tables. A very nice view for video, not too close, but very close enough to see and hear this totally awesome show. I got some good footage of Taylor and Sam playing their guitars to each other. Jason was great and of course, Brian was beyond wonderful!

As usual. I am a ditz and can't remember the set list but I know others will have it. "DLMD" was especially amazing and I got a very nice video of that. He sang some old favorites. He did "Feelin' Alright" and one I haven't heard in a while, but is a favorite of mine..."Forever Man." He tagged a song with "Tupelo Honey," and that was spectacular. I do believe I also got that. "Nineteen" is always good, but again my video may be dark on that one. WRIR was done so well...I got that too.

"Maybe You Should" was passionate, gentle, and just so moving. My video of this one was on my small camera, so I will have to try to lighten it before posting. "Runaround" was energetic and great fun! He did "SMB," and the finale was just one song, "The Border Song." I did get that one captured as well. That performance alone was worth going for! Very intimate and moving...just Taylor and Brian out there and they just blew us away.

There were two women next to us, a mother and a daughter, who had not seen Taylor live. To say they were hit with the WOO is an understatement! After the M&G, Taylor and the band came out and he signed and then talked to fans. This mother and daughter duo got to talk to him and the young girl was dazed for the rest of the night...lol. She is going to try to go to more shows. As Taylor said on stage...
"One Fan At A Time." The crowd was small but mighty and they gave our guys a ton of LOVE! Oh and they also gave them a tray of Jager bombs :)

This was once again a truly awesome show. I am loving the acoustic performances the best of all! And it was sooooo fantastic to see Sam and Brian and Jason up there with our guy. Just like the old days with LiMBO, and it did our hearts GOOD!

Well, that's it for what it's worth on very little sleep and a huge Taylor high. I know others will have better recaps with more details about the set list. All I know is....THIS WAS FREAKIN AWESOME!

THIS IS A GLOWING TRIBUTE TO TAYLOR, THE ARTIST. I HAVE TO WONDER WHETHER THERE IS SOME TRUTH IN THIS REVIEW.

TO BE AN AMERICAN IDOL OR NOT TO BE : THAT IS THE QUESTION.

I WOULD BET THAT TAYLOR WOULD NEVER EVER TAKE OFFENSE AT THE SOUL PATROL MEMBERSHIP AS IT STANDS NOW, BUT SOMETHING HE MUST THINK ABOUT IS EVENTUALLY GETTING RID OF THAT AMERICAN IDOL LABEL. THE PRODUCT HE HAS TO SELL HAS ENOUGH MERIT WITHOUT ALWAYS SHOWING THE CONTENTS ON THE LABEL THAT IS AMERICAN IDOL.

Review: Taylor Hicks rocks another 'market'

Taylor Hicks belted out blues and rock with technical brilliance at the High Noon Saloon Friday night. Katjusa Cisar/The Capital Times

A mighty force pinned Taylor Hicks to his chair Friday night at the High Noon Saloon. He did his best to fight it -- squirming in the seat, kicking at the floor, sliding and jerking his chair around -- and all the while belting out blues and rock with technical brilliance.
In or out of a chair, Hicks knows how to lay it down. Backed by an ace trio, Hicks sculpted songs with strong-armed bellows and sly nudges. His raucous "Forever Man" and Nick Lowe's "I Live on a Battlefield" sparked with feeling, with no small help from Brian Less' pounding keyboard and Sam Gunderson's slithering guitar solos. Hicks didn't pick up his harmonica until late in the show on "What's Right Is Right," then let loose on it with screaming, fluttering blues.

Still, something was off. The performance overall, as good as it was, felt hemmed in.

Call it the American Idol Curse. Hicks, winner in 2006 of the show's fifth season, still seems wrapped up in the slimy music biz aspect of the Fox reality show. After leading off with "Soul Sarenade," he told the audience that in the "50 or 60 markets" he's toured in the past year, this was the band's first snowfall. Later he mused on the "merchandizing business," and how "One Fan at a Time" would make a great Tshirt slogan.

When a fan bought him a Jaeger Bomb, he turned away from the audience to slug it, explaining that there are "some instances in American Idol where you play the parenting role."

Sure, he was half-joking. But he was still pandering to the fake morality network television thrives on, and it felt icky.

It was absolutely fascinating to watch his fans, dubbed the "Soul Patrol." Almost uniformly female and middle-aged, they parked themselves in the small seating area in front of the stage. One brought a huge Tupperware container of Christmas cookies.

Often it felt more like a press conference than a concert, as fans documented the heck out of the show with photography gear of various strengths and sizes. Most probably saw more of the show through the glowing frames of their cameras than with their own eyes. Two even set up video cameras on mini-tripods on their tables.

When Hicks couldn't remember which album "In Your Time" was on, one fan immediately grabbed one of his older, pre-American Idol albums out of her bag and waved it in the air.

"You know my music better than I do," he joked.

He's in a tough spot. If Hicks wasn't on American Idol, his voice wouldn't have reached millions of ears. But now, if he didn't advertise "American Idol winner" in front of his name, he might attract the people who are rightfully wary of the overwrought singers the show usually spits out.

Stripped of his association with American Idol -- and the constrictions and hoopla and stigma that come with it -- perhaps Hicks would soar. Or at the very least get up out of his chair.

American Idol alumni focus intensely on the fan. Obviously, from the beginning of the show, they depend on earning fan votes. American Idol fans are some of the fiercest around, of course, but I can't help but wonder what would happen if Hicks untethered himself from the American Idol Machine and focused on what he wanted. If Hick's No. 1 fan wasn't a grandma sitting at his feet with Christmas cookies, would he act and sound differently?

Local musician Mark Harrod opened up the show as "the nuts in the chocolate chip cookie," as he self-deprecatingly called his role, the "filler" until Hicks got out of "Grease" at Overture Hall. A reformed banker now spreading the good news about living life to its fullest, Harrod charmed the crowd with his pop-rock originals.

At one point, he looked down at his keyboard and enthused, "Man, I love the piano." His appreciation is infectious, though it sometimes weighs down his lyrics with overthought earnestness. Still, it's a crime if a joyous tune like "Body & Bones," off his new album "Quietly Marching," doesn't start getting significant airplay on stations like Triple M.
