Holiday Traditions Shine Bright in Jacksonville FL

2 November 2009

Jacksonville holiday traditions feel like the smooth touch of your favorite book – comfortable, worn, but there’s always something new you haven’t discovered. Many holiday events in Jacksonville were created more than 20 years ago and are well-loved by visitors and residents alike. As the holidays become more hectic for many of us, perhaps its time to slow down and enjoy familiar traditions in Jacksonville.

For 23 years, The Jacksonville Landing Tree Lighting has signaled the start of the holidays in Downtown Jacksonville. The 56-foot artificial, eco-friendly tree lights up over the St. Johns River creating a festive atmosphere. Festivities include live entertainment and a fireworks show on Nov. 27. The fun continues as scheduled synchronized music and light performances will take place weekly at The Landing leading up to New Year’s Eve. www.jacksonvillelanding.com

The St. Johns River continues to sparkle during the Jacksonville Light Parade on Nov. 28. Sailboats and other watercrafts parade down the river in the heart of Downtown festively decorated for the holidays. Holiday enthusiasts light up the sails and dress up as Santa, while waving to the crowds along the riverbanks. A spectacular fireworks show follows the parade, with Jacksonville’s signature “waterfall” fireworks cascading from two Downtown bridges. www.coj.net

The Alhambra Dinner Theatre reopens its doors on Dec. 1, just in time to put on its annual production of A Christmas Carole, shown at the theatre for the last 20 years. The theatre recently closed while new management took over and renovations were completed. Patrons will be most excited by a new buffet-style menu created by acclaimed local chef Matthew Medure, of Matthew’s Restaurant, Restaurant Medure and Take Away Gourmet fame. A Christmas Carole is a family-classic and a performance not to be missed this holiday season. www.alhambradinnertheatre.com

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) invites visitors “all aboard!” for their annual Trains! exhibit. Hundreds of model trains are on display and Jacksonville’s rich railroad history is celebrated. Santa Claus stops by to have breakfast with children on Dec. 5 and 12. (www.themosh.org) Mr. Claus also makes an appearance at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Dec.19-20. Lions, elephants and a man in a big red suit, oh my! www.jacksonvillezoo.org

There are many opportunities to catch a showing of The Nutcracker in Jacksonville and every local is sure to have a favorite, so ask around. The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra presents this much-loved fairy-tale on Dec. 4. And the Symphony continues to celebrate the holidays with its Holiday Pops concert Dec. 11-13 and the angelic Handel’s Messiah on Dec. 19. www.jacksonvillesymphony.org

The Florida Theatre presents The Nutcracker with the Florida Ballet, Dec.18-20. Children will also be interested in Mooseltoe: A New Moosical on Dec. 16. This is the tale of a young hero, Mooseltoe, when he leaves his mother, father and sister to follow his dream of learning to fly so that he can help pull Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. www.floridatheatre.com

A new tradition returns for its third year, The Lighting of the Great Tree at the St. Johns Town Center is another festive way to celebrate the holiday spirit. This year, the event has expanded and now offers a free day filled with holiday festivities including kids’ activities and a concert with American Idol season 5 winner Taylor Hicks. This holiday event, Nov. 21, kicks-off the holiday season early and gets shoppers in the mood to purchase the perfect gift at one of the Town Center’s stores, many not found anywhere else in Jacksonville. Festivities begin at noon, Santa and Mrs. Claus light the tree at 8:30 p.m. and a fireworks finale concludes this festive event.

Jacksonville, Fl-It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Jacksonville. The 3rd annual tree lighting at the St. John's Town Center is scheduled to take place Saturday, November 21st.

Festivities kick off at noon including all kinds of activities for kids including games and a kid zone. American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will be performing a mini holiday concert at 8 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. is the tree lighting ending with a fireworks show. This is a great event to bring the family to and get into the holiday spirit.

Sal Saldana came in to our morning show to give us a few details about the tree. Standing 32 feet tall, right in front of Maggiano's, the tree has already been decorated and the lights are in place.

Sal said that putting this tree together was not an easy task. But all the hard work will pay off next Saturday during the tree lighting festivities. This event is free and open to the public.

St Johns Town Center Tree Lighting with American Idol
American Idol winner Taylor Hicks is scheduled to headline the third annual holiday event at St. Johns Town Center on November 21, 2009.

This event is filled with holiday festivities including live entertainment, kids activities and even fireworks. Beginning at noon, you can enjoy a street festival featuring arts and crafts, food vendors, entertainment, giveaways, carnival games, balloon artists, face painting and characters from the popular online community Tootsville. There will also be very merry activities like bounce houses, a magician and jugglers.

The Tree Lighting ceremony begins at 6 p.m. with special performances from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Jacksonville Mass Choir and Charlie Walker.
At 8 p.m., the fifth-season winner of American Idol Taylor Hicks will perform his soulful hit songs as well as seasonal favorites to get everyone into the holiday spirit. This season’s concert takes place in a new location in front of the Great Tree in Park Green near Maggiano’s.

Immediately following the performance, Taylor Hicks will join Santa to lead the audience in an exciting countdown to light the dazzling 30-foot tree and a spectacular fireworks finale!

“We’ve had such a great response from the community the past two years, and 2009 is even bigger and better with extended festivities,” said Kristin Balvin, director of mall marketing and business development for St. Johns Town Center. “We are thrilled to bring back the tree lighting again this year and look forward to sharing this holiday tradition with Jacksonville families.”

In speaking with Gregg from Radioio, he said it is a new mall & he is making every effort to get his work schedule changed so he can attend. He is really 'fired up' about Taylor being there; especially, since its his hometown.

As for Josh ~ I thought he said he was from Fort Lauderdale?

It would be wonderful if Gregg could get some audio of Christmas music for his show.

Am dying to know who will be with Taylor : Brian Less, John K. Cant' be Josh ....

I adore Taylor singing Christmas music. I think he does such a classy job with either light Christmas song or more serious Carols of the Season.
