The Washington Times http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/dec/21/green-glover-hicks-coming-in-grease/ GREEN & GLOVER: Hicks coming in 'Grease' Taylor-made "When you get into the music business, you get into the germ business as well," laments recording artist and season five "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks in a phone interview on Friday with G2. The 30-something Mr. Hicks has been under the weather with strep throat but soldiered on to chat with us about his upcoming stint in the District when the musical "Grease" rolls into the National Theatre for a two-week engagement beginning Feb. 9. Mr. Hicks has been on the current U.S. tour of the Broadway musical -- which he describes as "an American staple" -- since 2008 playing the Teen Angel character. He says he's looking forward to being back in the nation's capital, which has always held a special place in his heart "since I visited the Smithsonian on a Safety Patrol trip" when he was in grade school. In addition to the tour, Mr. Hicks released his latest album "The Distance" in March and tells us its single "Seven Mile Breakdown" will be included in the production. Still, we couldn't let Mr. Hicks slip away without asking about politics. "I'm purple. Red and blue. That's the politically correct answer," he responded when asked about his personal political stance. When we suggested that he might segue into politics as a career, Mr. Hicks quipped: "Well, you have to do a lot of politicking on 'American Idol,' " referring to the votes that viewers cast on selecting the winner. Mr. Hicks, 33, also volunteered that he's been impressed with President Obama since meeting him in California when both were guests on "The Jay Leno Show." He's very calm and measured," Mr. Hicks says of the president, who's sometimes called "No Drama Obama." The prematurely gray performer also played it safe when commenting on the sudden departure of "Idol" judge Paula Abdul. "She will be missed, but Ellen DeGeneres will make a fine judge," Mr. Hicks said." Between now and February, though, he'll be nursing his throat while home for the holidays in his native Alabama, where, he told us, he'll be watching football. He's a Crimson Tide fan (natch) and will be providing "free entertainment" for relatives around the Christmas tree, singing "White Christmas," one of his favorite songs. |

A little promotion for WATW in this Grease Promo............ It's all Good Taylor Hicks releases DVD, and he’s coming to D.C. January 9th, 2010 Posted in Concert news, Taylor Hicks Good news for Taylor Hicks’ fans. The season five Idol champ has released a live concert DVD, “Whomp at the Warfield.” The concert was recorded in May 2007 at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The DVD features live performances of 10 songs of Taylor’s first album, including “Gonna Move,” “Give Me Tonight,” “The Deal,” “Soul Thing,” “The Maze,” “Right Place,” “Runaround,” “Wherever I Lay My Hat,” “Just To Feel That Way” and “Heaven Knows.” More importantly, there are six songs you won’t find on either of the post-Idol albums Taylor has released to date — “Heart and Soul,” “Hold on to Your Love,” “The Fall,” “Badge,” “Naked in the Jungle” and “My Friend.” The DVD is available at Barnes and Noble, Best Buy and Fry’s, according to Taylor’s Web site. Of course, Taylor continues to tour the country playing Teen Angel in “Grease.” If you missed the show when it landed in Baltimore last year, you have another chance to see it nearby come February. “Grease” will stop at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., from Feb. 9 to Feb. 21. Sixteen shows are planned during that time, including two shows each Saturday and Sunday. (Mondays are off days for the cast.) Looks as though tickets range from $36.50 to $96.50 depending on the day and time of the show you plan to attend. You can go to the National Theatre Web site here for more information on tickets. One of my colleagues at The York Dispatch caught the show in Baltimore and said Taylor treated fans to an impromptu performance of some of his music at the end of the show. http://ydblogz.com/chatter/?p=7065 |

BroadwayWorld.com OPENING IN FEBRUARY, 2010 - MUST-SEES: (1) From February 2nd to Feb. 21st, Grease, at The National Theatre, in Washington, DC. Fifth season American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and contestant Ace Young (who finished 7th) slick back their hair, and will energize the National Theatre stage, as they bring their own "Greased Lightning" to the Nation's capital. OK, the show is silly, and it's been produced a zillion times, and DC has seen a zillion Grease productions in local community and dinner theatres, and tours, but who cares? You can't beat a night out at the theatre that reminds us of the innocence and growing pains of the 50's. This tour is receiving raves all over the country, and I want to see why. Plus, I love the National Theatre! Everything looks great there, and in these tough times - couldn't we use a little "Shakin' at the High School Hop"? http://dc.broadwayworld.com/article/A_Theatre_Lovers_Guide_to_DCCapital_Area_Theatres_February_2010_Offerings_20010101 |

A bit of new "news" at the bottom, that bears repeating. From Idol to Angel Appeared in the February 2010 issue By Natalie Koss http://www.ontaponline.com/wordpress/theater/idol-to-angel/ With his trademark salt-and-pepper hair and down-home style, Taylor Hicks became one of the most recognizable faces to emerge from American Idol. In 2006, Hicks was crowned the show’s winner after beating out such notable competitors as Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry and Kelly Pickler. His reward: a recording contract, worldwide notoriety and a guaranteed place in the annals of musical history. Perhaps even more importantly, Hicks was subsequently impersonated on Saturday Night Live, thereby achieving musical icon status. Now, Hicks is cutting his teeth on stage in the touring production of Grease. Taking on the role made famous by Frankie Valli in the 1978 film version, Hicks plays Teen Angel in the fantasy scene featuring the hit number, “Beauty School Dropout.” “I had numerous roles offered [for the stage] but we thought the Teen Angel role would be great to get my feet wet,” explains Hicks, who has been on the road since Grease started its tour in June of 2008. Grease has been a popular musical for decades. After premiering on Broadway in 1972, it quickly became a smash hit. With the subsequent film and numerous regional and community productions thereafter, Grease has become a musical theater classic. Named after the teen greasers of the fifties, Grease became one of the longest-running shows on Broadway, transporting audiences to the seemingly innocent era of the 1950s with such song favorites as “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Sandy,” “Grease,” and “You’re the One that I Want.” The story centers around the teenage love affair of Danny and Sandy — two teens from different sides of the tracks. After a whirlwind summer romance, they believe they are going their separate ways, but fate steps in and gives them a second chance at love when, unbeknownst to Danny, Sandy enrolls at his high school. What follows are the challenges of restarting their romance amidst the drama of high school cliques. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Hicks holds the distinction of being the oldest winner of American Idol, taking the title at the ripe old age of 29. Prior to that, he had struggled for years in the music industry. “I left home at 17 to be a musician. I did weddings, the openings of city parks. I did that for ten years,” says Hicks. His win on American Idol can be attributed to the support of his well-known group of fans, dubbed the Soul Patrol, whom he acknowledged with numerous shout-outs on the show. When he released his eponymous debut after the Idol win, that support quickly helped it achieve platinum status. His sophomore effort, The Distance, was released in March of 2009 as the first imprint from his own record label, Modern Whomp Records. “Because of the ever-changing music industry, I wanted to have my own label and [be able to ] sign acts in the future,” he explains. Hicks is excited to return to Washington for Grease. “I love the city,” he enthuses. “I had great memories there. I performed at Christmas in Washington.” Despite his busy tour schedule and Idol commitments, Hicks found time to write an autobiography, “Heart of Soul: Find Your Voice and Finding Your Way,” to inspire other singers. “When you go through fame, life can be hard. This book is inspirational and it is about living the American dream,” says Hicks. In typical over-achieving fashion, Hicks not only performs as Teen Angel, he also sings “Seven Mile Breakdown,” a song from his new album, as an encore performance. “I am doing a shadow tour with Grease,” he explains, noting that his band will be booking shows to correspond with the musical’s travel schedule. Hicks won’t be the only Idol on stage at the National Theatre; fellow 2006 finalist Ace Young is playing the lead role of Danny. A musical success in his own right, Young has gone on to become a Grammy-nominated songwriter. In addition to singing and writing, Hicks is adding acting to his growing list of talents. “When I made a guest appearance on Idol last year Simon Cowell was pushing me to do movies,” says Hicks. “He was interested in that path for me and I am too.”Grease runs from February 9-21 at the National Theatre, 1321 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.; 800-447-7400; www.nationaltheatre.org. Tickets begin at $51.50. Edited by mouser, Jan 31 2010, 07:24 AM.
