Around Town: ‘Grease’ returns to Proctors Published: Thursday, January 28, 2010 No comments posted. | Email to a friend | Print version | ShareThis| RSS Feeds By Bob Goepfert The Record "Grease" at Proctors This week "Grease" is the word — again — as the popular musical is at Proctors Theater in Schenectady through Sunday. It’s hard to believe that there exists anyone who hasn’t seen the show, but the work has such appeal that people can see it over and over. It started as a small musical in Chicago in 1971 and got an Off-Broadway production the next year. When it moved to Broadway it set the record (since broken by "Phantom of the Opera") for being longest running musical at 3,388 performances. In 1978 it was made into a classic film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. The production coming to Proctors is the recent revival which incorporates four songs from the movie into the show. Which probably will not shock anyone as few people knew the difference. One reason to see it at Proctors is the appearance of Taylor Hicks the 2006 winner of American Idol. Taylor Hicks is playing the role of Teen Angel, a role he assumed on Broadway during the run of the revival. He’s stayed with the show becoming an important part of the national tour which began in December 2008. Should you worry the role of Teen Angel is not large enough to get your fix of the Idol star - reports have it he does a mini-concert at the curtain call. If you’re planning to take your kids to the show, the easiest way to prep them might be to describe "Grease" as sort-of "High School Musical" - except it's set the 1960s. I caught the 'age' remark also & thought "Hmmm?" Oh well, what's one year? I couldn't believe the Mick Jagger answer! What was that? Maybe because he has been in music for so long? Never was a fan of his. As for Taylor's version of 'Pants on the Ground'. Think I'll pass! I enjoyed each one of these interviews. Thanx for the links.

A bloggers take on the show: Kara's This Place is Dead Anyway. This is not the raving review we like to see, but it is an honest view of Taylor 's appearance and I must say he does "ham it up". That can be a good thing. The one thing people will remember when they leave this Grease Production is the role of Teen Angel, but Mr. Hicks............ yessiree As for my half-assed review, the show was pretty good! The Vince Fontaine warm up was pretty funny, especially when he asked where people were from and someone shouted out Climax, which led into a joke throughout his opening AND showed up in the show (Yes, those not from this area, Climax is a real city in Greene County and my friends giggled like fiends when we drove through it on our way to a wedding). If it WAS staged, you'd never know it, cause this guy looked genuinely surprised by it. The show had not one, but two American Idol alums in the midst. Ace Young played Danny and while his accent left little to be desired, his acting chops, dancing ability and vocals were definitely good enough. He still looks pretty damn good too, even with those ridiculous pompadours! The show was advertised heavily as "starring Taylor Hicks," but he only played Teen Angel, surfacing for one number, which he performed just fine. Like Ace, the vocals were strong... thank God. The dancing, was another story! As anyone that watched Idol knows, Hicks was basically told NOT to dance, his movements being a bit... herky-jerky, for lack of a better term. He proved that again last night. He was certainly entertaining, just a bit too campy and over the top for my taste. Maybe it's cause I'm a Daughtry fan, I don't know! During his "Beauty School Dropout" number (where he descended from the sky, of course), Frenchie was all up in his business and at one point, looked him in the eye and said "I voted for you." I have no idea how she or he kept a straight face, but the audience loved it. Anyway, the audience stuck around after the show to hear him sing a song from his new CD, which was quite good! It was more of the soul based stuff we're used to hearing from him, and he was already out signing autographs when we got out of the theater. All in all, great job by the actors! One in particular (Rump!?) had an amazing voice! He was a touch chubby and I have to say, I just didn't expect such a voice to fall out of his mouth considering I thought he was simply there for comic relief. I stand corrected. I adore Proctor's, and now I'm just going to wallow in the fact that Spring Awakening is coming the ONLY week I've gone away in like.. years.. Bitter.. party of one! Isn't that the point of Taylor's part in Grease anyway: A means of furthering his career with exposure, & to be remembered by the attendees? To my knowledge, Taylor has neveer claimed to being graceful on his feet. There will always be others, who favored someone else from Season 5; so little 'pokey' remarks are expected. In any case, Taylor does a fabulous job with his part. The numbers have proven that.
