January 26 - 31, 2010
Nominated for 2008 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical

The one that you want is back! GREASE, Time Magazine’s 2007 pick for “#1 musical of the year,” is rockin’ across the country in this new production direct from Broadway.

Take a trip to a simpler time of poodle skirts, drive-ins, and T-birds. “Bad boy” Danny and “the girl next door” Sandy fall in love all over again to the tune of your favorite songs: “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “We Go Together” as well as additional songs from the hit movie: “Grease,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One That I Want.”

So throw your mittens around your kittens and Hand Jive the night away with the show that’ll make you want to stand up and shout, “A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop A-wop-bam-boom!” GREASE!

Thanks, mouser. That city is smart, tying in restaurant specials with the play. Thinking outside the box to create awareness, interest, and business.

Father figure

'Grease' role comes naturally to 'American Idol' winner

By MICHAEL ECK, Special to the Times Union
: Thursday, January 21, 2010

Gray-haired "American Idol" star Taylor Hicks was only 2 years old when the classic film version of "Grease," starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was released in theaters.

He does remember, though, as a young musician, singing the title song and "You're The One That I Want" in bars and at weddings.

Now Hicks is starring in a touring version of the 2007 Broadway "Grease" revival, which actually -- for the first time -- fuses songs from both the original show and the film into one live production.

Hicks isn't playing Danny Zuko, though. He's Frankie Avalon rather than John Travolta, meaning that he plays Teen Angel, the benevolent soul -- a "rock and roll father figure" as Hicks put it -- who tries to help Frenchy with her high school predicaments ("Beauty School Dropout").

Hicks says that Broadway wasn't in his original world-domination plan, but he also says he won't soon forget the June night in 2008 when he took his first bow on the Great White Way.

"That was an amazing experience. I'll never forget it. It's one of those things that will always live on in your mind."

Hicks says his notoriously rabid fans, "The Soul Patrol," have been very supportive of his foray into theater, and he also offers them a treat at all performances of "Grease."

"I actually perform a song as part of each encore, so the show does have a concert feel at the end as a bonus."

In addition to his road gig with "Grease," Hicks is also pushing a new album, "The Distance." It's the first on his own Modern Whomp label.

Hicks, unlike most "American Idol" contestants, was actually a professional musician before he became an "Idol." He says the move from being on a major label to having his own imprint is freeing, and he hopes to one day include other artists ion his roster.

"Grease" opens at Proctors on Tuesday and runs through Jan. 31.

'Idol' Taylor Hicks stars in 'Grease' at Proctors
Published: Thursday, January 21, 2010

SCHENECTADY — The new Broadway production of the Tony Award nominated musical “Grease” opens at Proctors on Jan. 26 and will run through Jan. 31.

Recording artist and “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks stars in the production as “Teen Angel.”

Hicks made his Broadway debut in the role of “Teen Angel” and has been on the road with “Grease” since the tour began Dec. 2, 2008.

“I had such a great experience performing on Broadway,” Hicks said. “This is a great opportunity to visit old fans and new fans across the country while bringing them a great Broadway show.”

Hicks achieved widespread fame in 2006 as a contestant on the hugely successful “American Idol” on Fox.

On May 24, 2006, Hicks was named the winner of the fifth season of “Idol,” with more than 63.4 million votes in total, during the live finale which aired to a worldwide audience of over 200 million viewers.

On March 10, 2009, Hicks released his new studio album “The Distance,” featuring the single “Seven Mile Breakdown.”

The new production of “Grease” features songs from the smash hit 1978 motion picture for the first time ever in a Broadway production, including “Sandy,” the Academy Award-nominated song “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Grease” and “You’re the One That I Want,” both of which were No. 1 hits on the Billboard Top 100 list.

These songs will be heard in addition to the Jacobs/Casey songs made famous by the original stage production including “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’ ” and “We Go Together.”

“Grease” originated in Chicago and made its premiere at The Kingston Mines Theater in 1971 before making its New York premiere off-Broadway at the Eden Theatre on Feb. 14, 1972.

After 128 sold-out performances, the show made the transition to Broadway taking up residence at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 7, 1972.

“Grease” was nominated for seven Tony Awards in its initial run. On Nov. 21, 1972, the show moved to the Royale Theatre before making its final transfer on Jan. 20, 1980, to the Majestic Theatre.

It closed as the longest running show in Broadway history after playing 3,388 performances.

In 1978, “Grease” became a hugely popular feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the lead roles.

Tickets for “Grease” at Proctors Jan. 26-31 are $65, $55, $40 and $20, available at Proctors Box Office 432 State St., 346-6204, or online at proctors.org.

This is part of the Keeler Broadway on Tour Series. Sub-sponsors include William Van Evera, CLU, CHFC, Eastern Medical Support , Bank of America, Albany-Troy Cateract & Laser Assoc., Saratoga Imaging and Muddy Cup.

Free parking, sponsored by the Times Union is available for most performances in the parking garage on Broadway behind Proctors.

Significant discounts on tickets are available for groups of 20 or more. A listing of shows and pricing may be found on proctors.org/group_sales or by contacting Proctors Group Sales at 382-3884, ext. 139.
