We asked Jake Davis if he would take the time to answer a few questions to tell the fans a little more about himself, and what it was like working with Taylor. He was great about stopping and taking the time out to do it almost immediately. 1. We are all obviously excited to see Taylor's first video. What was it like working with him, were there any moments that particularly stood out? Working with Taylor was a really fantastic experience from start to finish. I really enjoyed the time in between takes, scenes, and set-ups where we actually got to know each other as friends and not just working professionals. 2. We know that Taylor is "hands on" in every step of creating his CD. Did this hold true for his video as well ? Taylor had a lot of great creative ideas for the video that I implemented into the narrative. He's definitely an artist that knows what he wants but is also willing to take creative input, which is the perfect balance. 3. How did you develop the concept for this video? From the little bit we have heard, it seems to be perfectly suited to Taylor and his performance style. After listening to the track a ton of times a few iconic images jumped into my head. I talked about them with Taylor and he had some really fantastic narrative ideas that were sparked from the emotion and lyrics of the song. We had a few great brainstorms over the phone about how to incorporate all these ideas into the video. 4. When working on a music video, is there a certain genre you prefer shooting? I really love every genre of music. So I can't say I have a preference but I do have to say when an artist is 110% committed like Taylor was it really shows in the video. And that I do prefer. 5. Having to shoot retakes must be difficult. How did you keep the energy level of the cast, particularly Taylor, up, and just as high on the last frames as it was on the first ones that morning. Lots of coffee and energy drinks on set! 6. From reading your site, you do music videos, spots and short story films. Do you have a particular work that you are most proud of? why? It's really hard to say. It's quite difficult to be objective of your own work. What's important to me is getting better every time out. I'm really proud of what we were able to accomplish with this video on a creative, emotional and technical level. I think everyone really pushed themselves and it shows in the video. 7. What is the strangest thing you have had happen to you while filming a music video? Well, on this particular video we were shooting exteriors through a blizzard in the middle of the night in Chicago. You'd think the streets would be empty but fans were still crowding around to see the action. I thought that was pretty amazing. 8. Does it make a difference to you whether you are drawn to the music of an artist in deciding whether you will do a video, or can you find inspiration regardless. As a video director ultimately the music has to speak to you. If the music isn't telling you anything then you're not going to make a great video. Thankfully with this one the music was doing plenty of talking. please stop by Jake's blog jakedavis.typepad.com and thank him for taking time to talk to the fans, as well as giving us the 2 great screen caps from the video TO LEARN MORE ABOUT JAKE DAVIS ... I want to know more about the lighting "engineer". He has done a magnificent job in creating a mood that compels me to "beg for more". I am also anticipating great things from the film editors. This has the potential to be a top notch video. |
